Mrs. G is a 79-year-old African-American female who has been receiving home delivered meals for a little over a year. Mrs. G is a diabetic and has an artificial leg. She suffers from heart disease and experienced 2 strokes after heart by-pass surgery. Mrs. G despite her physical health continues to strive for independence as much as possible. Since Mrs. G had no family support, we assigned a homemaker to her a couple of months after becoming a client of Meals on Wheels. With assistance from her homemaker, Mrs. G made the decision to move from a rented home on Fort Hill Street to McAfee Towers, Macon Housing Authority senior apartments. Mrs. G knew that if she could reside in a lower cost, efficient home, she could become even more independent. She is enjoying improved nutritional health and enjoying living in a clean home. Mrs. G when asked on a rating scale of 1 to 10 how would she rate the quality of her life said that before becoming a client of Meals on Wheels, she was a 3 but has improved to at least an 8 or 9. Mrs. G says she has improved health wise and that she has something to be thankful for; i.e., good food, good help, lower rent and utilities and household expenses plus more laughter, more independence, happiness and more social interaction. She said that if she had never been introduced to Meals on Wheels, this would have not been possible.

She has a speech impediment as well as a heart condition. This couple has survived their children and their granddaughter who cares for them will soon be married and move to California. In addition to home delivered meals, we hope to be providing them a homemaker in the very near future. They are a great couple and we will enjoy serving them.
Ms. Charlotte is an 83 year old female that lives alone on $623.00 a month (Social Security and SSI). She suffers from diabetes and arthritis. In addition to these chronic illnesses, her feet are swollen most of the time and she feels weak and without energy. Ms. Charlotte is a soft spoken lady but she told the social worker over and over how much she really appreciated the meals that would be coming. She is so relieved to know she will have something to eat on a regular basis.
Ms Annie suffers from diabetes and is a double leg amputee and all of her fingers have been amputated except she has ½ a thumb on her right hand. We were concerned about whether Ms Annie could open the meal; but, there was nothing to worry about as she has adapted to her physical condition extraordinarily well and maintains a positive outlook on life.
